Legal professionals live in Microsoft Word. When building LexBrief.ai, the goal was to bring advanced AI contract auditing directly into the environment where lawyers already work, rather than forcing them to adopt a new platform.

LexBrief acts as a senior AI auditor residing in the Word sidebar, checking every clause against a firm’s specific Playbook.

The Problem It Solves

Manual contract review against internal firm standards is time-consuming and prone to human error. LexBrief automates this by flagging risks, categorizing their severity, and generating redlines—all within seconds and directly inside Microsoft Word.

Technical Highlights & AI Integration

Building LexBrief required navigating the complexities of Office Add-in development, real-time AI streaming, and enterprise data security:

  • Microsoft Word Add-in Integration: I engineered a seamless Word plugin with Microsoft 365 SSO. It reads the document context, detects the contract type automatically, and allows users to apply AI-suggested redlines via Word’s native Track Changes API.
  • Playbook-Driven AI (Claude Integration): Instead of generic legal advice, LexBrief uses Claude AI to audit the contract strictly against the user’s custom Playbook. Every risk flagged (High, Medium, Low) is grounded in the firm’s specific rules.
  • Real-Time Streaming & Diff Viewing: The application streams the AI’s analysis back to the sidebar in real time. It generates accurate text diffs, allowing users to visually compare the original clause with the AI’s suggested revision before applying it.
  • Enterprise-Grade Security: Knowing the sensitivity of legal data, I implemented a SOC 2-ready, multi-tenant architecture. Contract text is processed in-memory and discarded immediately, ensuring zero data retention and strict compliance with legal confidentiality standards.
